Second, I have doctor’s clearance to do anything that doesn’t cause more pain.
With those in mind, a little background:
Injury: Was showing wife my KB snatch while practicing it on ETK PM, began to drop the KB from overhead position (got about 8 inches down) and my wife walked in front of me, I jerked back up hard to avoid impaling her. Crackle, snap, pop, Ive earned a visit to my chiropractor. I tried going back to PM when I was cleared, but it was painful and I was lazy.
1 month ago: I had gotten in shape through traditional weightlifting and interval training, and decided I wanted to return to functional training. So, I took a week off of everything then started ETK PM again.
Now: Im 3 weeks in, and having a ton of dull shoulder pain (sharp only when pulling) in the same place, but only after get-ups/high pulls. Monday is swings, Tuesday get-ups, Wed off, by Thursday my shoulder is feeling pretty good again. Im practicing my high-pulls, snatches, c&p on training days. Practice looks about like this: cleans (3-4 on each side), high-pull weak side (low, high) then snatch. High-pull to snatch progression on strong (injured) side. Again weak side, again strong side. Cleans, 3-4 each side and a couple presses from the loaded clean. Ive been extremely cautious with the presses as they seem to aggravate the problem. I experience no sharp pain during practice, except sometimes on presses in which case I stop and drop, discontinuing any press practice for the session.
After swings, no shoulder pain, Im a little tight and sore in the hips (but nothing a little SJ cant fix very quickly). Doing everything with a 16kg bell, and as far as I am concerned (Ive looked over all the fine points of the get-up both in ETK and in the articles on the site) I’m not neglecting anything. I could be wrong, but I dont think I am.
I would order Secrets of the Shoulder and find a Z-health specialist, but I dont have the cash to drop for either. What can I be doing or how can I modify things to recoup my shoulder?
Best,
Tyler
