Realistic and time sensitve fat loss goals?

Comrades,

I purchased a body fat percentage scale yesterday, and I’m trying to establish some S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measureable, Achieveable, Realistic, Time Sensitive) goals for dropping some body fat.

I remember from my Weight Watchers days (don’t laugh…it works! Four years ago, I lost 77 pounds in a little over seven months) that the general rule of thumb is to set a 10% weight loss goal, to be achieved, ideally, by losing one to two pounds a week. Then, reevaluate and set new goals.

But I’ve never measured my bodyfat before, and I’m unsure if there is kind of a generally accepted rate of losing body fat. I’ve educated myself on interval and strength training, my diet is pretty solid, and I’m ready to go about it the right way, and patiently. Now I just need to figure out what some reasonable goals are.

Thanks in advance.

p.s. I’m 44, I weigh 244, and I’m in good overall health. I understand that the scale’s reading isn’t going to be 100% accurate, but close enough. Modesty forbids me from revealing the exact percentage, but let’s just say it’s too flippin’ high!
