Question on Military Press

Ok I have a problem with my shoulders popping whenever I try to do a military press. I was in PT this winter for nerve issues in my arms, and mentioend the shoulder popping to the PT. She felt it was a weakness, but she couldn’t pinpoint where the problem was, so she just gave me general strengthening exercises for my shoulders but that was also the solution for my nerve issues.

Anyway sometimes the pops hurt, which I know isn’t good. The pain usually occured on the way done, no to much on the way up but the popping occurs either direction. That is with or without weights btw. Well I’ve been working with KB now on an off since 2006 and never figured out the perfect way to do a MP without my shoulders popping. Well last night I found it.

If I keep my arm in the rack position (ie elbow against my side), pull my shoulder blade down/tense it up (ie engage it) and lift stratight up and twist my hand just before lock out, then pull down in the same position there is no popping. If I try to push my elbows away from my body at all the popping starts no matter how much I engage my lats. I also noticed when I lift in this fashion my elbows actually lock out. When I lift flaring my elbows out I have a really hard time locking my elbows out or flat out can’t. I asked the PT about why I can’t lock out and she felt again it was weakness in my biceps and triceps. I have also been told by an RKC in the past that I seem to lock out my elbow doing snatches, but any other movement I can’t. MY guess is because with the snatch my arm is in this same position as doing the MP in this fashion.

Anyway before I start doing all my MP like this, I wanted to make sure it was OK to do them in this fashion. I don’t want to set myselff up for injury, although I think doing them by flaring out my elbow does just that since is sometimes causes pain. My guess is it has something to do with weakness in my lats/biceps causing my shoulder cavity to not be stabalized properly or causing my joint to move in an odd way, but that is just a completley guess :) My sister has sholder problems due to an extra bone growing in her shoulder, so I might have that I’ve just never had xrays done, so I don’t really know.

Anyway what are peoples opinions? I can’t afford an RKC right now so that really isn’t an option. I can take a video to show people, I just hate recording myself :)
