My oldest just turned 12. He’s big for his age – 5 foot 7, 135# – but soft as a pillow. He picked up basketball last year and did very well. Strength and conditioning is not his strong point. Part of it is that it’s very hard to drag that huge body of his all over the place. In the lower age groups, the smaller, short-limbed kids have a huge advantage in coordination, energy level, and core strength for obvious reasons until around age 12-14 (to wit – the baseball all stars under age 12 are usually the smaller kids – the bigger ones overtake them in the early teen years) This kid is starting to overcome all that. He could be dominant, but his strength is holding him back. He also wants to play football in the Fall. He was not allowed to last year because he was too big to play with kids his age and too young to play with kids his size. The youth football league has ridiculous rules that end up sending kids to HS unprepared for the positions they will play due to the artificial weight limits.
What I am looking for is an idiot-proof system that I can very slowly move him forward on to develop a bit of strength to prepare him for sports next year. I surmise that CC has a pretty straightforward program in it with progressions. Has anyone used this with a kid, and what limitations would be appropriate?
